The 2014 Tulloch Stakes will take place on Saturday March 28 at Rosehill.

On the 5th of November, the 2013 Melbourne Cup races off!

Tulloch Stakes History

The Tulloch Stakes was first run in 1973 as a Principal race contested over 1850m and the inaugural winner was Longfella.

In 1979 the event was elevated to its current Group 2 status, which was also the year the Tulloch Stakes’ distance was increased to 2000m.

From 1989 – 1990 the race was registered as the Carrinbush Cup before reverting back to its original title in 1991, and then from 1996 – 2001 the race name changed to the Tulloch Wine Stakes due to sponsorship.

In 2010 the Tulloch Stakes was run as the Myer Tulloch Stakes.

Tulloch Stakes Betting

When it comes to placing your bets on the Tulloch Stakes, there are a number of earlier autumn carnival events for three-year-olds that horses in the Tulloch Stakes field may have come via.

Watch for colts and geldings that put in eye-catching runs in events including the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1200m) at Flemington in February, the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley in late March and the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1400m) a fortnight before at Rosehill.

Many Tulloch Stakes runners will continue their autumn campaigns with a run in the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick the following Saturday, and combining these two races is a popular betting double with the punters.

The most recent winner of the Tulloch Stakes – Australian Derby double was Starcraft in 2004, while in 2010 the Gai Waterhouse-trained Descarado ran second in both the Tulloch Stakes and the Australian Derby and would later go on to win the Group 1 Caulfield Cup during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The Tulloch Stakes has produced a number of horses that have continued on to do well in the highly prestigious Spring Carnival Group 1 events including the iconic Melbourne Cup run at Flemington on the first Tuesday of November each year.

For example, in 2010 Maluckday ran third to Count Encosta in the Tulloch Stakes before continuing on to finish a gallant second to Americain in the Melbourne Cup that year.

The best Tulloch Stakes betting tip is to place your wagers online through an Australian bookmaker such as Luxbet or Ladbrokes.com.au to enjoy longer odds and bigger winning payouts than the TAB.
